Lesson 5 looks at survival skills essential to hunters if they are to cope during an emergency survival situation in the outdoors.
By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
Define the term survival as it relates to outdoor situations.
State the three P’s of outdoor safety when planning a hunting trip.
Describe what a hunting plan is and state three reasons why a hunter needs to develop a plan for every hunt.
List at least five categories of items that should be included in a survival kit and provide an example of an item that would belong in each.
Describe four steps to take if you become lost in the wilderness.
Explain the importance of mental self-control in an outdoor survival situation and state five survival factors that will influence your ability to maintain mental control.
Describe at least three types of natural emergency shelters.
Describe the procedure for building an emergency lean-to shelter.
List three benefits of having a fire during an emergency survival situation and state the basic materials needed to start one.
Explain the importance of water in an emergency survival situation and state at least two ways it can be made safe to drink.
List at least three examples of edible foods found in the wild for each season of the year.
State the universal signal for help when lost in the outdoors.
Explain what the HELP and HUDDLE positions are and when to use them.
State three safety practices to follow when boating, travelling on ice, or by ATV and snowmobile.
State three examples of outdoor situations where it would be important to know first aid.
Explain what hypothermia is and describe its symptoms, treatment, and ways you can reduce your risk of exposure.
State at least five ways you can reduce your risk of contracting a disease while hunting or just being in the outdoors.
