Lesson 6 examines the skills and practices essential to making hunting safe, productive, and enjoyable.

By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
  • State at least three field techniques that you must have knowledge of in order to be a safe and successful hunter.
  • State at least three guidelines with respect to how you should dress for a hunting trip.
  • State the primary purpose of a compass.
  • Identify the major parts of a compass and explain what each does.
  • State three ways a hunter can use a compass without a map.
  • State at least three types of maps that a hunter might use and briefly describe each.
  • Name at least four parts of a topographical map.
  • State two ways a hunter can use a map and compass together.
  • Define the term magnetic declination and explain its importance with respect to determining a bearing from a map.
  • Explain the term GPS and state two functions of a GPS unit.
  • State at least three types of tree stands.
  • Describe at least three safety practices that should be used whenever you hunt from a tree stand.
  • State three reasons why it is important to sight-in your rifle before you hunt.
  • State at least three guidelines for sighting-in a rifle.
  • Name three techniques for shooting game birds with a shotgun.
  • Define the term lead poisoning as it relates to waterfowl and state at least three alternatives to lead shot available to waterfowl hunters.
  • State three practices that hunters should adopt when using steel shot to hunt waterfowl.
  • Explain the term big game crippling loss and state three ways hunters can minimize it.
  • Define the term vital target area and visually locate it on at least two examples of big game animals provided in the student manual.
  • State three recommended shot angles for placing a shot in the vital target area with a rifle.
  • List the steps for finding a big game animal after it has been shot.
  • Define the term field dressing.
  • State the three main causes of meat spoilage with respect to field care of game.
  • Name at least three items used to field dress big game.
  • Describe the general procedure for field dressing big game.
  • List at least three guidelines with respect to properly transporting big game from the field.
  • Describe the general procedure for processing small game and game birds including migratory game birds.
  • Identify three major species of native wildlife and three migratory species of wildlife hunted in New Brunswick.
  • Identify two examples each of areas within the province where hunting is prohibited and areas where hunting is permitted with permission only.
  • Name two ways you can further your hunter education efforts.
