Lesson 3 focuses on black powder, rifle cartridges, and shotgun shells. Ammunition components are explained as well as topics such as trajectory and ammunition safety.

By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
  • Explain the difference between a rifled and smooth bore barrel firearm.
  • Define the term calibre and explain how it is measured.
  • Define the term choke.
  • State four choke types and describe their effect on shot pattern.
  • Define the term gauge and explain how it is measured.
  • State four types of black powder projectiles.
  • Describe the parts of a rifle cartridge, their purpose, and what they are normally made from.
  • Explain the difference between centre and rim-fire cartridges.
  • Describe the parts of a shotgun shell, their purpose, and what they are normally made from.
  • Determine the type of ammunition a rifle or shotgun uses by referring to its data stamp.
  • Identify a rifle cartridge calibre or shotgun shell gauge by referring to its head stamp.
  • Explain why it is important to use the correct ammunition for a firearm.
  • State three common shotgun shell lengths and know how to correctly determine a shot shell’s length.
  • Name at least four common rifle cartridges.
  • Name at least four common shotgun shell gauges.
  • State the approximate dangerous range for common rifle and shotgun ammunitions.
  • Describe the term trajectory and state four factors that will influence a bullet’s trajectory after it has been fired from a rifle.
  • Describe the difference between hangfires, primer pops and misfires and state the recommended safety procedure for dealing with each.
  • State at least five safety practices related to ammunition use.
