Lesson 4 focuses on firearm actions, how they work, and how to safely load and unload them.

By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
  • State the general procedure for properly loading a muzzleloader.
  • Describe when to use smokless and black powders when loading a firearm.
  • State the purpose of a firearm’s action.
  • State six common types of firearm actions.
  • Describe how to safely pick up, handle, and load/unload hinge, bolt, lever, pump, and semi automatic action non-restricted firearms while applying the ACTS and PROVE procedures.
  • Explain the purpose of a safety and why it should not be depended on to prevent a firearm from accidentally discharging.
  • State five types of firearm safeties found in non-restricted firearms and explain how they work.
  • State two common types of magazines found in non-restricted firearms and be familiar with how they work.
  • State the maximum number of cartridges permitted by law for centre-fire semi-automatic rifles and shotguns.
